Sheet Metal Stamping Process

September 23, 2024
Sheet metal stamping is a processing method that uses a mold to plastically deform a metal sheet. By installing a specific mold on the press, the metal sheet is placed between the molds, and then pressure is applied to change the shape and size of the sheet under the action of the mold, thereby obtaining the desired part shape.

Basic process of sheet metal stamping process

1. Design and preparation
First, according to the design requirements of the part, the mold is designed and manufactured. The design of the mold needs to consider factors such as the shape, size, precision requirements and production batch of the part. At the same time, it is also necessary to select suitable metal sheets, such as cold-rolled steel plates, hot-rolled steel plates, stainless steel plates, aluminum plates, etc.
Before stamping, the sheet needs to be pre-treated, such as cleaning, degreasing, and rust removal, to ensure the cleanliness and quality of the sheet surface.

2. Stamping processing
Place the pre-treated sheet on the workbench of the press, and accurately position the sheet on the mold through the positioning device. Then, the press starts, and the pressure is transmitted to the mold through the up and down movement of the slider, so that the sheet undergoes plastic deformation under the action of the mold.
According to the shape and requirements of the parts, stamping can be performed once or multiple times, such as stretching, punching, bending, flanging, etc. During the stamping process, it is necessary to control parameters such as pressure, speed, stroke, etc. to ensure the quality and precision of the parts.

3. Subsequent processing
After the stamping is completed, the parts need to be processed later, such as deburring, cleaning, surface treatment, etc. Deburring can be done mechanically or chemically to ensure the surface smoothness and quality of the parts. Cleaning can remove oil and impurities on the surface of the parts to prepare for subsequent surface treatment. Surface treatment can be done by spraying, electroplating, oxidation, etc. to improve the corrosion resistance and aesthetics of the parts.

Characteristics of sheet metal stamping process

1. High efficiency
Sheet metal stamping process can achieve high-speed and automated production, greatly improving production efficiency. A press can perform dozens or even hundreds of stamping operations per minute, which can meet the needs of large-scale production.

2. Accuracy
Through the design and manufacture of molds, high-precision parts processing can be achieved. The precision of the mold can reach the micron level, which can ensure the dimensional accuracy and shape accuracy of the parts.

3. Flexibility
The sheet metal stamping process can design and manufacture molds according to different part shapes and requirements. At the same time, different stamping processes such as stretching, punching, bending, flanging, etc. can be achieved by adjusting the parameters of the press and the structure of the mold, which has strong flexibility.

4. High material utilization
The sheet metal stamping process can maximize the utilization of materials through reasonable layout and mold design. Compared with other processing methods, the sheet metal stamping process can reduce material waste and reduce production costs.

Application areas of sheet metal stamping process

1. Automobile manufacturing
Sheet metal stamping is widely used in automobile bodies, chassis, engines and other parts. For example, the covers, doors, hoods, etc. of automobile bodies are formed by sheet metal stamping. The sheet metal stamping process can achieve high precision, high strength and lightweight of automobile parts, and improve the performance and safety of automobiles.

2. Electronic products
Sheet metal stamping is also often used in the shells, brackets, radiators and other parts of electronic products such as mobile phones, computers, and televisions. Sheet metal stamping technology can achieve miniaturization, lightness and beauty of electronic products, and improve the competitiveness of electronic products.

3. Home appliance manufacturing
Sheet metal stamping technology is also widely used in the shells, panels, brackets and other parts of home appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners. Sheet metal stamping technology can achieve the durability, beauty and functionality of home appliances, and improve the quality and user experience of home appliances.

4. Aerospace
Parts of aerospace equipment such as aircraft, rockets, and satellites also need to adopt sheet metal stamping technology. Sheet metal stamping technology can achieve high precision, high strength and lightness of aerospace equipment, and improve the performance and reliability of aerospace equipment.

In short, sheet metal stamping technology is an efficient, precise and flexible metal processing method with broad application prospects. With the continuous advancement of science and technology and the continuous development of the manufacturing industry, sheet metal stamping technology will continue to innovate and improve, and make greater contributions to the development of modern manufacturing industry.
